My youngest always needed a lot of hands-on engagement while learning. The only way I could get him interested in story time was if he acted out the story as I read it. So, naturally, his favorite toys were very tactile—blocks, Legos, railroad tracks, anything he could build with. One day, while watching him play, I noticed his amazing creativity. He had taken a Lego piece that had a hitch on the back, secured a pencil to it with a rubber band, and was flying it around the room. When I asked him what he had made, his explanation was as whimsical as his imagination. But to me, it was the spark of an idea.
