Six Weeks Until Kindergarten — The Milestone No Checklist Prepares You For

Six weeks. That was the number in my head all through my oldest’s last summer at home — six weeks until kindergarten.

I expected to spend that countdown worrying about whether he was ready. That’s the question everyone hands you, after all. But that’s not what happened. As the day came closer, I wasn’t running his learning through my mind at all.

I was feeling the size of it. Kindergarten was such a big milestone for him — and, I realized that summer, for me as a mom.

The milestone has two names on it

We talk about kindergarten as the child’s milestone, and it is. First classroom, first backpack hook with his name over it, the first big step into a world that’s his.

But you’ve been the whole school until now. The story time, the counting on the stairs, the person who watched every skill arrive. When a homeschool mom walks a child to kindergarten, something of hers is graduating too.

What I didn’t do with those six weeks

I didn’t cram. I didn’t turn our last summer into a bootcamp of everything kindergarten might ask of him.

By that point I’d learned to trust what I could see: he could do the things we’d practiced, and the things still wobbly would keep growing in a classroom the way they’d grown at our table. Readiness had stopped being a fear I carried and started being a list I could look at. That freed the summer to be what it actually was — the last one of its kind.

What the last summer is actually for

If you have a kindergartner-to-be in the house right now, here’s my gentle push: spend the six weeks on together, not on catch-up.

• Read the favorites one more round. The same story again and again is exactly how this age learns — and it’s the sound he’ll carry with him.
• Keep hands busy side by side. A page he colors while you sit close does more for his confidence than a drilled skill ever will.
• Let him hear you say it: “You’re ready. I can see it.” A child walks taller into a new place when someone he trusts has named what he can do.
• Take the photo on the ordinary days, not just the first one. The porch, the sprinkler, the counting on the stairs. That’s the era that’s ending — honor it.

Keep a little proof, for both of you

One thing I’m glad I did: I kept his finished pages. What started as my way of seeing his skills turned into something else by August — a record of the year we’d had together.

That folder answered the readiness question better than any list on the internet, because it was him: his tracing getting straighter, his counting going further, his name written by his own hand. And on the first morning, when he walked in and I walked back to the car, it was proof of something for me too. I had done it. He was ready, and I’d watched it happen page by page.
